Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, 57th Street & 7th Avenue, NYC
Omar Faruk Tekbilek, born in the Turkish city of Adana to a musical family, is one of the foremost interpreters of Sufi, folk and contemporary music of the Middle East. An evocative vocalist and virtuoso on several instruments, including the ney (bamboo flute), baglama (long-necked lute) and the oboe-like zurna, he has become a major force in world music since the 1970s. His collaborations have included composer/producer Brian Keane, trumpeter Don Cherry, flamenco’s Tomatito and Enrique Morente, Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour, and 'ud and violin master Simon Shaheen. His ensemble features Hasan Isakkut (kanun-zither), Itamar Erez (guitar), River Guerguerian (drums/percussion), his son Murat Tekbilek (percussion), and special guests Brian Keane (guitar) and Ara Dinkjian (oud). Their program will include selections from Tekbilek’s newest CD, Love Is My Religion.
