Experience masked dances from the Ivory Coast, mesmerizing rhythms of Aceh (Sumatra), delicate court dances of Lucknow, North India, lively traditional dances of Bulgaria, soulful flamenco, dramatic Japanese dances, and graceful classical dances of Orissa, India!
2pm: Indonesian, Bulgarian, Japanese and Indian Dances
Portraying sensual movements with martial arts and electrifying rhythms, the Saung Budaya Indonesian Dance Group led by Amalia Suryani performs the traditional dances of West Sumatra, Sunda, Borneo, Aceh and Jakarta.
Inspired by the ancient culture, rituals and myths of Bulgaria, Elissaveta Iordanova and her Gorana Dance Collective revive the complex beauty of uneven rhythms through a masterfully woven tapestry of dance.
Japanese Folk Dance Institute of New York’s Minbuza, under the direction of Momo Suzuki, introduces audiences to the culture and history of Japan and the spirit of the Japanese people with authentic folk dances, music, colorful costumes, and props.
Under the artistic direction of Bani Ray, the Trinayan Odissi Collective revives the classical dance from the region of Orissa, India, exposing audiences to the gracefulness and lyrical beauty that is Odissi.
7pm: West African, North Indian and Flamenco Dances
The Kotchegna Dance Company, under the artistic direction of Vado Diomande, brings to life the ancient stories and legends of Africa’s Ivory Coast, performing a repertoire with masked dances, intricate footwork and explosive energy.
Janaki Patrik’s Kathak Ensemble & Friends communicates the richness of Indian culture, performing the classical Lucknow style of kathak with its rich poetry and storytelling techniques.
Danza España, led by Yloy Ybarra, performs a diversity of flamenco dance traditions, highlighting the essence of Spanish dance, music and song with choreography that adds fresh insight and inspiration.
